Sulphate Attack: What is it?
The problem arises from sulfates in the ground under the slab, which seep into the concrete and set off a reaction that causes the slab to heave. The heaving is most noticeable at the ends of the slab, where it is most deeply buried, which gives the appearance of a rounded-corner trapezoid. Sooner or later, the concrete will be weakened and fragmented. If and when it does, any internal walls built upon the slabs will be lifted and will break the structure.
